Aging with Pride
OK2BME partnered with SPECTRUM, Waterloo Region’s Rainbow Community Space, to offer a one day conference entitled Aging with Pride. This conference was designed as a training opportunity for service providers working with older adults who identify as LGBTQ. The conference involved a screening of Gen Silent, an award-winning documentary about aging queer seniors and the service providers who struggle to support them. Attendees learned about LGBTQ history and why rainbow seniors are afraid to come out within senior-serving organizations. They heard from a panel of queer elders who shared personal stories of fear, discrimination and finding allies. Rainbow Health Ontario shared tips for making your service agency welcoming and inclusive for older adults and seniors, then Fudger House long term care facility shared its journey to becoming a LGBTQ positive space.
All attendees left with the following resources:
- LGBTQ Seniors Fact Sheet
- What Does Positive Space Look, Sound and Feel Like?
- LGBTQ Cultural Competency Assessment for the Workplace
- LGBTQ Cultural Competency Assessment for the Individual
We received one-time funding to run this conference but we can replicate it for your company or organization for a fee.
Aging with Pride remains an active support group for LGBTQ seniors in Waterloo Region and is supported by SPECTRUM.
