GSA Conference 2020 Cancelled, By Washington Silk

Dear OK2BME Community,

We regret to announce that we have had to cancel this year’s GSA Conference.

This event is crucial for LGBTQ2+ youth and their allies in our community. We have been working with the school boards to provide this conference since 2010.

The GSA conference every year becomes a magical day for students. It is a day they can feel affirmed, celebrate their identities, and learn about things like local LGBTQ2+ history.

Happily, this magical day will return in partnership with our local school boards in 2021.

This year, the conference is not possible because of the current job action which affects the school boards’ ability to ensure safety related to supervision on field trips.

We share the view that education should be a priority and is a necessary investment for the future success of our province.

Teachers and educational workers are an integral part of this success as they influence a positive and productive learning environment for students and we know are especially important for creating safer and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ2+ students.

The people we serve remain our top priority and our counselling services and youth groups have not been affected. This change in our calendar means that we will be able to help organize an additional Pride Prom this spring!

Save the date for Pride Prom Cambridge May 8th at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts in partnership with the City of Cambridge and Pride Prom Kitchener on May 28th at the Victoria Park Pavilion in partnership with the City of Kitchener.

We will have some very exciting news to share shortly about this years Pride Prom, so stay tuned.
