Hello from Erin! Our new Community Engagement Lead, by Erin Huston

Hi everyone! I’m Erin Huston (she/her) and I am BEYOND excited to be introducing myself as OK2BME’s new Community Engagement Lead! I’ve lived in KW since I started my undergrad degree at the University of Waterloo in 2013 (except for that one year I lived in Brantford for my Masters but we don’t count that), and to work for an organization like OK2BME that does such powerful work across the Waterloo Region is an incredible honour.

Prior to joining the OK2BME team with Camino Wellbeing + Mental Health I worked with different non-profit organizations, in roles that focused on facilitating skill-building with youth, and building community capacity through education and knowledge sharing. I’ve spent time developing curriculum and facilitating classroom conversations on justice, conflict resolution, and peace-education, and I spent time designing courses, conferences, and learning opportunities for professionals, caregivers, and folks with lived experience to learn about eating disorders, disordered eating, and the impacts of diet culture. I am so grateful to my previous work for leading me to OK2BME, and giving me the tools to dig into tough but important conversations about systems, communities, individuals, and how they all interact.

Growing up in rural Ontario, my knowledge and understanding of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community as a young person was limited. I remember being in my high school’s GSA and engaging in basic conversations around equality and support, but it wasn’t until I went to post-secondary that I had the opportunity to explore my own identity and start to build a true understanding of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and the nuance of individual experience within it. I am thrilled to be working with an organization whose cause is to build understanding and invite the greater KW community to ask tough questions and support the community continue doing better for 2SLGBTQIA+ folks.

Okay, I think that’s enough from me for now! Thanks for reading and I’ll hopefully see you around soon.
