Study on LGBTQ2 Health in Canada, By Washington Silk

We have some exciting news to share with you!

On May 7, 2019, two OK2BME team members, Washington Silk and Scott Williams, went to Ottawa to speak to the House of Commons of Canada’s Standing Committee on Health.

We were invited to appear as witnesses before the Committee in view of its study on LGBTQ2 Health in Canada. The study focuses on the health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Two-Spirit (LGBTQ2) people in Canada, as well as on the health of individuals who identify as intersex, non-binary or whose identity is not represented in the LGBTQ2 description.  It was such a huge honour and opportunity to be invited.

It was important for us to speak about what we do at OK2BME and to represent the things we talk about every day. In the end, we wrote a ten-minute speech that focused on mental health, trans health issues and LGBTQ2+ youth. You can find a copy of the brief we submitted here. If you’re interested, you can listen to an audio recording of the meeting here.

We will be watching closely, and we invite you to as well, to see what comes out of the Standing Committee’s recommendations to improve health of LGBTQ2+ Canadians.
